Saint Damien, an early Christian saint, was martyred almost two thousand years ago. With a local chapel to his honour, the name for this domaine could seem pre-ordained. It enjoys great exposure, based in what is called the ‘hot corner’ of the Gigondas appellation. Here, a matching of 80% 1949 Grenache with 20% 1978 Mourvèdre, delivers us a wine from the commune of Violès, found in the lower-terraced parcels of Plan de Dieu lieu-dit. This is a deeply coloured, spicy and juicy offering of dense blue-black fruits. It’s a recommended full-flavoured companion for a gentle evening basking in a fireside glow.
