These Champagne’s are ‘under the radar’ masterpieces with incredible depth and terroir intensity and priced way below their true value.
Nothing fancy at this Domaine, apart from the wine that ends up in the bottle. The vineyards are farmed organically and some are certified biodynamic, not in line with popular trend, but because this was the hollistic way Francis was taught by his father and grandfather. In fact, when Francis took over the making of the wine in 1973 he didn’t even realise that there was such a thing as commercial yeast hence indigenous yeast ferments have always been the norm. Francis is so respected as a vigneron and has been working in the area for so long, that he is allowed by his neighbouring vignerons to work their first three rows bordering his vines so that what they do to the rest of their vines doesn’t affect his. This is our second allocation with daughter Delphine in complete control of the Domaine. Delphine has been working alongside her father since 2003 so the transition has been seamless. I could go on and on and we have plenty more details on Francis Boulard et Fille if you are interested, however we realise you are busy so here are the wines that we have to offer from this shipment. There’s a lot to love about this wine especially if you love Meunier! One of the best we’ve tried featuring this grape and it reminds us of the more famous Jerome Prevost, but with their own unique style.
100% Chardonnay fruit from a certified organic plot called ‘Le Murtet’ in their home village of Cormicy in the Massif de Saint-Thierry in the northernmost point of the Montagne de Reims region of Champagne. The vines are ancient at 60-80 years old and are planted on sandy limestone soils. Based entirely on the 2015 vintage, with no dosage. Only the first pressed juice is used whilst vinification occurs naturally with indigenous yeasts and takes place on fine lees in small barrels and large casks with regular batonnage, but only on fruit and flower days per the lunar calendar.
This latest Vieilles Vignes comes from the 2015 vintage, a warm and dense year that adds to the luxurious feel and ripe fruit complexity to this wonderful wine. A saline and chalky all Chardonnay cuvee comes from a single old vine parcel planted in the 1940’s on a very thin sandy limestone soil. This wine saw neutral oak ageing to allow more complexity and slight oxidation. There’s loads of personality and refined charm with lemon, peach and pear fruits, delicate floral notes, wet stones, clove and mineral all supported by an exceptionally fine mousse. This is fabulous Champagne, hand crafted and stylish grower fizz with serious presence. Importer Notes
“The NV (2015) Blanc de Blancs Les Vieilles Vignes is a powerful, deep Champagne loaded with tremendous character. The combination of old vines and low dosage yields a wine of driving intensity. The Boulard Vieilles Vignes is a stark, minimalist Blanc de Blancs that engages all the senses with its magnificent purity and finesse. I loved it. Dosage is 2 grams per liter.” 94 Pts, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Nov 2020
