Almost three years ago, Peter and Magali Gely, believers in the power of time and tradition, bought the century-old Dominion vineyard. Set in the heart of The Barossa, it is the home of historical parcels, deep-rooted in fine, silty sand over friable red clay, of both the 1910 Grenache and 1918 Shiraz. The former even provided the source for some of the earliest bottling by the legendary Yalumba family.
First vintage or not, this Shiraz matches real power with amazing delicacy. It showcases the intense purity gained from brilliantly-farmed old vines. It begins with cherries and black plums. Then comes dark chocolate, a touch of graphite, and even a shaving of new leather. Spot a background sliver of top-class oak, amid barely perceptible silky tannins.
This offering will still be great in a decade or two; for us, it’s just too drinkable now for that level of patience!
